Mickey, Minnie and their "Savage" Kinfolk

Examine historic images the Disney company now dreads being seen. Burgeoning Hollywood studios of the 30s used caricature to destroy the identities of marginalized, underserved communities. We’ll study Disney’s “Julius,” an incredibly similar figure to the lucrative “Felix the Cat” as we consider motives to popularize such anthropomorphic creatures. We’ll discuss the tremendous fortunes made by expropriating the vast ancestral homelands, the generations of forced laborers, and the natural and mineral resources of “enemies” deemed to be “savages.”
