James Carey

James Carey is a distinguished professor emeritus at UC Davis who is widely recognized for his innovative teaching and research in entomology and demography and his best practices in science writing and presentation. 

He is the author of Biodemography: An Introduction to Concepts and Methods (Princeton; 2020), which features extensive educational resources, including a multilingual video series. Carey has authored several books and over 200 scientific papers on lifespan and aging, supported by grants from the National Institute on Aging. 

He has earned numerous teaching accolades, including the UC Davis Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award, the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Entomological Society of America, and recognition as a semi-finalist for the Baylor University-based Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching to honor exceptional educators in the English-speaking world. 

His students consistently excel in STEM writing, winning multiple UC Davis writing competitions, including first place in the Norma J. Lang Prize writing competition every year for the past five years. In 2024, Carey was an invited member of a panel on the use of AI in aging research and teaching at the national meeting of the Gerontological Society of America in Seattle.
