UC Davis Pre-College Program: Equine Science (Session 1)

Saddle up to learn about equine science, the study of horses, ponies, donkeys, mules and zebras. You’ll spend two weeks exploring the principles behind the physiology, behavior, nutrition, diseases and reproduction of equine.

This fun, experienced-based program will cover a broad range of topics about equine and our relationship with these animals—from how the domestication of equine shaped humans to understanding the dietary needs of a mare with a foal. You’ll also make new, four-legged friends at the UC Davis Animal Science Horse Barn, where hands-on labs will enhance the concepts discussed in lecture and allow students to interact and learn from some of the best teachers in equine science!

  • Visit the Center for Equine Health and observe our vets in action
  • Learn how new research is being implemented at the Animal Science Horse Barn
  • Get hands-on experience in practicing care techniques for equine
  • Meet the UC Davis Equestrian team and watch a special demonstration

Get inspired as we explore potential career opportunities focused in equine, including working with underserved populations in developing countries whose lifelines are working equids, protecting endangered breeds of equine right here in California and working with elite equine athletes.

Section Notes

Students may take part in Session 1 or Session 2, but not both. The core curriculum for the sessions will be the same.

Please note that Session 1 will be more appropriate for students who are new to Equine studies or have not yet had extensive experience interacting with horses. There will be more time in Session 1 spent on safety and basic concepts in the care of equids. Session 2 will be the best choice for students who have had extensive interaction with horses.
